Groceries, big-box stores, restaurants and appointments are all close to home, the downtown sits right on the river, and from June to September there is live music or a festival on the waterfront almost every week. Mahone Bay, Lunenburg and the beaches are a short drive away for the weekends.

What is there to do in Bridgewater?
Summer is packed. Music on the Riverbank puts on free open-air concerts at Pijinuiskaq Park, Fresh Air Films shows free outdoor movies at Shipyards Landing, and the South Shore Exhibition, the Big Ex, has run every summer since 1891. September brings the free Harvest Moon Music Festival and the Pijinuiskaq Paddle Festival, and the Parade of Lights opens Christmas on the LaHave at the end of November.
Bridgewater Boat Tours runs river cruises and rents kayaks and paddleboards on the LaHave. The 8 km Centennial Trail loops around the town centre through forest, meadows and parks along the river. The farmers’ market runs Saturdays at 123 Empire Street, indoors and out, and the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre has the arena, the pool and the gym. The DesBrisay Museum in Woodland Gardens is free all year, and about half an hour away Crescent Beach is one of the few beaches in Nova Scotia you can drive onto.
Is Bridgewater a year-round town, or does it empty out?
It is the most lived-in town on this coast. Very few homes here are seasonal or empty, far fewer than in Chester or Queens.
It is also the South Shore’s shopping and service centre, so the town stays busy and open all year. If you want neighbours in February rather than in July, this is where to look.
Can a non-Canadian buy in Bridgewater?
Yes. The federal ban on non-Canadian purchases applies only inside Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations. Bridgewater's population is below the threshold for a census agglomeration, so it is in neither and the ban does not reach it. The Act has been extended before, so confirm its status at the time you buy.
Nova Scotia's 10% non-resident deed transfer tax is separate and it does apply, with an exemption if you move here and file proof of residency within a year of closing. For closings before 6 August 2026 that window was six months. Full detail is in Buying From Away and the South Shore Buyers Guide.

What does a house cost in Bridgewater?

As a rough guide, under $350K buys an older in-town home, a semi or the occasional small bungalow, and it’s the most realistic first-purchase band anywhere on the South Shore. $350K to $550K is the family band, three and four bedroom houses in established neighbourhoods near the schools, and it’s where most sales happen. $550K to $800K buys newer builds on the edges of town and the better river-facing streets, and above $800K you’re into acreage, larger properties or something with income.
Are homes in Bridgewater on a well and septic?
Inside the town, homes are on town water and sewer. On the outskirts and the acreage past the town line, expect a private well and septic system.
Make your offer conditional on a water test, for quality and for how much the well delivers, and on a septic inspection. Ask how old the septic system is too, because replacing one is a real cost and it belongs in the conversation before you firm up.
How far is Bridgewater from Halifax?
About an hour and twenty-five minutes to downtown Halifax, roughly 102 km on Highway 103, and an hour and forty or more to Halifax Stanfield airport.
Most of what you need day to day is already in town, including the regional hospital. Mahone Bay and Lunenburg are each about 20 minutes away.
